When natural disasters occur, a trail of damage and debris is often left behind. Recently, storms like Hurricane Irene have demonstrated the unpredictable nature of extreme weather conditions, reminding facility managers from all areas of the U.S. to be prepared should a storm occur.
For seasonal threats such as violent storms, hurricanes and earthquakes, it is recommended that commercial building owners invest in heavy-duty safety window film. Commercial film provides a powerful barrier to help hold glass in place should impact occur and can help reduce the need for costly repairs due to shattered glass. Commercial buildings that could benefit from window film include, but are not limited to, hotels, schools, universities, government buildings and health care facilities.
Although a disaster could strike at any time, there are areas that are more susceptible to the violent weather conditions that leave windows vulnerable to damage.
The most disastrous regions include:
- South Carolina
- The East Coast (hurricanes are most prevalent during Atlantic Hurricane Season from June 1- November 30)
According to a recent ABCNews article, the Southern Coast will also continue to experience the negative effects of extreme weather. In fact, the U.S. has seen 10 natural disasters in 2011, each accumulating at least $1 billion in losses.
Adam Smith, a physical scientist helping develop data sets for the National Climate Data Center (NCDC), shared his thoughts on why the South is experiencing severe financial loss due to weather-related damage. “Over the last several decades more people have been moving to the coast in the U.S. so that has [greater financial] implications for hurricanes in the South and Southeast,” explained Smith.
With the increase of weather-related disasters sweeping the nation, it’s imperative to consider building protection and tenant safety. Window film can help control and in some cases eliminate danger and damage caused by broken glass, all with reasonable financial investment.
